People often hide behind the mask, because the truth is so painful. Some people do that no matter how hard they denied to do so. You know, it is like you run away from realty to hide in your ‘own’ small world..
To feel comfort and safe for awhile. So you can be happy with your self.
Escaping from other people’s judgment. (Even if you say, you fine with that).

Remember, sometimes people have more than 1 mask.. Beware..
